Awarded an MPhil in sociology from the University of Poona, Sunita qualified NET (Masters Level) held in September 1987 in Sociology, conducted by the University Grants Commission. She was also granted the UGC Junior Research Fellowship at the Center for the Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
